Welcome Wreck Program Supports New Research Faculty Hires

Research faculty now make up nearly 60% of Georgia Tech’s faculty population, and of the full-time, non-GTRI faculty, more than 25% are research faculty. However, this growing subset of the faculty often misses out on traditional welcome experiences because of year-round onboarding. The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty aims to change that with the launch of the new Welcome Wreck program.

Sensor Fabric, Big Data Could Help End Pressure Injuries for Wheelchair Users

At least half of veterans with spinal cord injuries will develop sores on their skin from the unrelieved pressure of sitting for long periods of time in a wheelchair. It’s a constant worry, because these skin ulcers can greatly limit patients’ mobility. Along with Principal Research Scientist Sungmee Park, the School of Materials Science and Engineering's Sundaresan Jayaraman has designed fabric with a network of embedded sensors that covers the seat of a wheelchair. A companion smartphone app developed in the lab allows users to override the system to maintain comfort and stability.

She will be featured in an upcoming documentary on Black librarians, to be released in the summer of 2025.
